Efficient Unioners beat Leipzig: Audio Highlights
With two wins and a draw, the Berliners have had a successful start to the season. Leipzig are far behind their own claims after the current defeat and the two previous draws.
Some excitement over the foul on Werner
The “Iron” once again relied on their strength at home and on their fans, after all, only Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich have won there in the last 23 months. After a somewhat difficult first quarter of an hour with a little excitement due to a foul supposed to be worth a penalty on Timo Werner, the Berliners had their first big chance.
Simakan clears in front of the line, Werner hits the post
Julian Ryerson (15th) aimed flat into the left corner of the backcourt. RB goalkeeper Janis Blaswich, who made his league debut through an injury to Péter Gulácsi, was reportedly unlucky but Mohamed Simakan cleared just short of the line. Four minutes later, the cup winner had his first big chance. Werner kicked the ball past Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow, but only hit the left inside post.
Werner: “It is urgent to win a match”
Blitz RB Counter Shock
RB showed the more mature game system, had much more ball possession in the first round (76%), but the lead was taken by Union. Siebatcheu completed the first lightning counterattack with a low shot to make it 1-0, and the stadium shook. Even more ecstasy spread six minutes later, again after a quick counter-attack, which Becker completed at the far post.
The Berliners refined the counterattack to lead 13 seconds after winning the ball, and even after twelve seconds to make it 2-0. Leipzig’s defense looked messy every time.
RB with anger in the belly from the cabin
The Leipzig team started the second half with anger in their stomachs. Ambitious Saxons did not want to be treated so easily. But Union continued to hold back with a compact and aggressive team performance and tried to score a third goal.
Knoche: “Nice picture”
Substitute Marcel Halstenberg (68th) had a great opportunity to score in Leipzig. Rönnow let his shot slip from a cross under his right hand, but Ryerson cleared the line at the last moment.
Orban did better seven minutes before the end of regulation time by scoring the goal with a header. In the end, the Berliners trembled with victory on the finish line despite the onslaught of Leipzig. RB came out on top in all stats – but not on the scoreboard.
Orban: “I lost my patience a bit”
