An evening to forget for Robert Lewandowski: the ex-Bayern star deservedly lost with the Polish national team in the Nations League against the Netherlands.
Robert Lewandowski missed the Nations League final round prematurely with Poland. The worldwide Eastern European footballer and former Bayern star lost a clear Thursday night and won 0-2 against a solid Dutchman. The goals for “Elftal” were scored by Cody Gakpo (13th minute) and Steven Bergwijn (60th).
Thanks to success at the National Stadium in Warsaw, the Netherlands secured first place in Group A 4 and can look to qualify for the current season’s Nations League Final Four before the final day. After five out of six rounds, Poland remain in third place with four disappointing points.
A serious injury darkens the game
Lewandowski, who has scored 11 times in his first eight competitive games for FC Barcelona, was completely dismissed by the Dutch defense orchestrated by Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk. In the end, the 34-year-old didn’t even manage a single shot on goal.
The game was clouded by Teun Koopmeiner’s injury. The midfielder was hit in the neck in an aerial duel in the second minute and then collapsed. Medical staff treated the dazed Atalanta professional for several minutes before he was carried out of the stadium on a stretcher.
