VfL Wolfsburg remain the team of the hour in the Bundesliga. At the start of the 14th day, the “Wolves” beat the disappointing Borussia Dortmund 2-0 (1-0).

Wolfsburg remain unbeaten in the seventh consecutive game in the Bundesliga – four wins, three draws. And: For VfL, this was the first victory against Dortmund’s “fear opponents” after eight consecutive defeats.

Dortmund, where Marco Reus was out of the squad after fresh ankle problems, suffered a severe setback after three straight Bundesliga wins.

Early debut of the “Wolves”

The Wolfsburgs were immediately awake and in the game. First, Omar Marmoush, who stormed alongside Jonas Wind (in place of national player Lukas Nmecha), found his master with a powerful strike from BVB goalkeeper Georg Kobel (3rd). Three minutes later, however, VfL celebrated. Nico Schlotterbeck unwittingly extended a corner so that centre-back van de Ven only had to fall asleep at the far post – his first Bundesliga goal.

BVB, with Adeyemi in the starting XI for Giovanni Reyna, have been slow to recover from the initial deficit. The blacks and yellows took the initiative, but they had too many inaccuracies in the game in attack. VfL closed spaces well and remained extremely dangerous from a compact order of play. Jakub Kaminski returns to 2-0 from a corner, but Raphael Guerreiro saves his shot on the line (32nd). Marmoush also had another great opportunity for a higher lead.

Süle – lots of space, little yield

On the other hand, Niklas Süle missed the equalizer with the last action of the first half. The national player, who was reappointed as a right-back, only put a powerful shot on the post and was somehow the unlucky person for BVB. He couldn’t use the unusually large space he had on the right.

The picture was the same after the break: Dortmund lacked brilliant ideas. Recently outstanding teenage striker Youssoufa Moukoko could barely stand out. Wolfsburg, on the other hand, took dangerous tricks, but did not make enough of their chances overall, for example by Jonas Wind, whose shot Kobel again brilliantly parried, or by Kaminski, who ran towards Kobel alone and missed.

BVB coach Edin Terzic reacted to the lack of attacking performance midway through the second half, bringing in Reyna, Thorgan Hazard and Antony Modeste, but that should do nothing. On the contrary: Lukas Nmecha made the decision in the third minute of added time after Julian Brandt slipped past the penalty area and lost the ball. In the end, deserved victory for Lower Saxony, much softer that evening.
