RB Leipzig have already led by three goals against Hertha BSC in the Bundesliga – and yet had to fear success.

In reality, the match on Saturday evening (October 15, 2022) was already played at the break. Leipzig had shot on goal five times – and the ball was in the net three times. Emil Forsberg (25th minute), Abdou Diallo (30th) and Willi Orban (45th) scored the goals. In the end, Leipzig won 3-2 (3-0), but it was really no longer a sovereign success.

The tension arose midway through the second half when Hertha scored two goals within two minutes. Dodi Lukébakio first converted a penalty from the hand with confidence (63rd), then Stevan Jovetić scored from the turn (64th).

Ejuke, Selke, Kanga – Hertha have chances, but don’t score

In the final phase, substitute Chidera Ejuke was about to equalize, but his lob was not precise enough (82nd). Then Davie Selke, who was also a substitute, failed with a clean shot on Leipzig goalkeeper Jannis Blaswich (86th). And in the fifth minute of additional time, Wilfried Kanga also hit the post with a shot.

“Luck was on our side. It’s football, it can go fast. We have to learn from it and do better.”said Forsberg of Leipzig: “High praise goes to the Berliners, they did a good job.”

Szoboszlai hangs up twice

It was a game you wouldn’t have expected after the first half. Dominik Szoboszlai did the groundwork for Leipzig’s first two goals. He crossed first and Forsberg finished with his thigh. Then Szoboszlai took a corner – and found Diallo, who walked towards him. Central defender Orban scored the third goal from close range.

RB climbs to ninth place in the table with 15 points. These are spheres one can only dream of at Hertha. Previously, the Berliners didn’t lose five times in a row, now that streak is over. Hertha BSC are fifteenth in the table with eight points.

HSV, then Augsburg – stressful days for Leipzig

The break will be short for Leipzig. RB is challenged on Tuesday evening (18/10/2022) in the DFB Cup against Hamburger SV. On the 11th day of the Bundesliga, Leipzig must then go to Augsburg (Saturday October 22, 2022 at 3:30 p.m.). The next day, Hertha receives FC Schalke 04 (5:30 p.m.).
