Globules, tinctures and ointments can be used for a variety of complaints and illnesses, including women’s health. Homeopathy and women’s health

When it comes to homeopathy, opinions differ. Critics point to the lack of studies on the mode of action of homeopathic remedies and concede at best a placebo effect, whereas doctors, naturopaths and patients who prescribe or use homeopathic remedies are convinced of a healing effect and that it there are reference investigations.

Homeopathic medicines go beyond the placebo effect and have real clinical effects, says Rachel Roberts, executive director of the Homeopathy Research Institute in the UK. “Laboratory researchers from several countries have shown that homeopathic medicines can have biological effects on plants, fish, tadpoles and even isolated blood cells. These results cannot be explained by a placebo”, underlines the expert in an interview with the German Patient Association for Homeopathy. . In this context, she also points to an Israeli study (2020) showing that homeopathy can prevent seromas (accumulation of fluid) following mastectomy in patients with breast cancer.

Basically, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies are considered the so-called gold standard for clinical research. Some of the subjects receive the drug to be tested, others a placebo. Neither the participants themselves nor the therapists know who belongs to which group – hence the term double-blinding.

However, experts explain that the methods of evidence-based medicine are not quite suitable for proving the effectiveness of homeopathy. Because the choice of the right homeopathic remedy depends on the individual medical history and existing symptoms. Accordingly, two patients with the same disease, for example, heartburn, require different means of treatment. It depends on individual complaints. Studies that do not take this individualization into account would therefore very likely show less good results for homeopathy.

The concept of homeopathy

Homeopathy is one of the alternative healing methods and is based on the concept of “like with like” treatment developed by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann at the end of the 18th century.
An example: If fever is to be treated with homeopathy, a substance that causes fever is used, but in a hundredfold diluted form. Concretely, substances such as minerals, vegetable or animal products are very strongly diluted with another substance with so-called “powers”. Globules and drops are most often administered.

A detailed history is an integral part of homeopathic therapy. Based on this information, the appropriate drug is then selected. Basically, the goal of homeopathy is to enhance the body’s self-healing powers.

Homeopathic active ingredients for menopause

The side effects of menopause are multiple and vary from woman to woman. The most common are hot flashes, sweating, trouble sleeping and some anxiety.

From the field of homeopathy, for example, combined active ingredients can provide relief: black cohosh, squid, ingatius bean and Canadian bloodroot.

In this context, a study was able to show that 76% of the 233 subjects felt significantly better or were even without symptoms after taking it for three months, 16% perceived at least a slight improvement.

Assets of homeopathy against cystitis

About one in two women has a bladder infection at least once in her life. Many suffer from it more frequently, and some women even develop chronic cystitis. Depending on the degree of infection and the intensity of the symptoms, homeopathic remedies can also help here or be used in addition to conventional medical treatment.

When choosing the right active ingredient, the type of pain – burning, pressing, throbbing or spasmodic – plays a role, as does the location – lower abdomen or urethra – and in which direction the symptoms radiate. With this information, the practitioner chooses the individually suitable preparation.

  • Arnica and belladonna can help with the constant urge to urinate.
  • Cantharis is effective for bladder pain before and after urination and is one of the most commonly used homeopathic remedies.
  • Dulcamara can help when a bladder infection occurs along with a cold.

Homeopathic active ingredients against menstrual pain

PMS, cramps, fatigue, food cravings, mood swings, back pain are just some of the possible discomforts that many women experience once a month before and during their period. Homeopathic medicines can also be used to relieve this.

  • Nux vomica can relieve abdominal cramps.
  • Sepia can also relieve pain and help with irritability at the same time.
  • Lycoposium can have a positive effect on gas and bloating during the period.

A study conducted by the Israel Association for Classical Homeopathy (2019) with 105 women of childbearing age examined the effectiveness of individually prescribed homeopathic medicines compared to a placebo for PMS. Women in the homeopathy group reported greater improvement in PMS symptoms and required significantly less conventional medication.
